Lawn Mower Winter Storage

Preparing Your Lawn Mower for Winter Storage

As summer comes to an end, it's time to think about storing your lawn mower for the winter. Proper lawn mower storage will help ensure that your push or riding mower will be ready to go next spring, and help extend its overall life. Here are some easy-to-follow lawn mower maintenance tips.

Step 1

Replace the spark plugs. After a long summer of cutting grass, the spark plugs in your lawn mower may be worn or damaged causing decreased fuel efficiency and power, and increased carbon build-up. Before buying your new spark plug, compare the part number on your worn spark plug to the fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank. Fuel stabilizer prevents fuel from spoiling when the lawn mower is not in use during the winter months. By adding fuel stabilizer before winter storage, the fuel will be in top condition and your engine will start quickly and be more reliable in the spring.

Step 2

Change oil and oil filters. Changing the oil in your lawn mower ensures the oil will lubricate moving parts and remove particles from the engine. You'll increase the life of the engine while maintaining other lawn mower parts. The oil filters also need to be replaced so particles and dirt are removed from the engine lubrication system.

Step 3

Clean or replace the air filter. The air filter in your lawn mower prevents dirt or grass from reaching the engine. If foreign particles reach the engine or accumulate in the air filter, the engine may provide less power and use fuel inadequately. You can either replace the air filter, or if a pre-filter was supplied with your lawn mower, you can clean the filter with water and liquid detergent.

Step 4

Sharpen or replace the blade. To keep your lawn mower running properly and your lawn looking its best, you need to replace blades taht are chipped, bent or damaged. If the blade is dull or worn, you can use a lawn mower replacement parts. These pieces may include belt guards and belts, discharge chute or bag, mulch plug, tires and deck wheels, self-propel drive belt and the trail shield.
